Grounded and Grateful

I had never truly thought about being “grounded” until I began learning about the seven chakras last fall. Yes, the concept has come up throughout my life, but I failed to embody its meaning until recently.

I’ll admit, I’m a woman with her head in the clouds- whimsy and wild. My dreams are grandiose, my mind is fixated in the future, and I’m always looking for a deeper meaning to what is right in front of me. However, through meditation and nature, I began my own grounding practice without even knowing it.

There’s nothing like sitting in the grass, watching the birds fly by, smelling the crisp fall air, or sitting still to observe.

After a lack of creativity, I decided to balance my chakras, meditate, and free write yesterday. I came up with seven poems- each corresponding to a chakra- to reframe my thinking and open my consciousness.

The first is “Muladhara,” or “Rooted,” for the Root Chakra. Red Jasper supports this chakra with its grounding, safety, inner strength, and balancing properties.

I hope you enjoy my poem and find your own inner peace, grounding, and gratitude this weekend. 🙏🏻

Healing Crystals To Support Your Work

Lately I’ve been in the habit of keeping stones with me.  Depending on where I’m going and what I’ll be doing, I will pick a stone to keep in my pocket throughout the day.

After starting to carry these gems with me on an everyday basis, I became curious to learn which stones may benefit me at work, too.

Although I have a daily practice of meditation, enjoying my coffee, and reading in the morning, I need to remember my “zen” throughout the day, too.  I often need to reset at lunch time to breathe, take a walk, and clear my mind.  The stones have been helpful reminders to calm my brain, slow down, and take it easier on myself.  When I feel nervous or antsy, I just reach in my pocket!  The stone is a symbol to keep me conscious and to stay in the moment.  Do crystals actually do anything?  I don’t have a scientific answer for that; but I do know they have been used for centuries (and I would never turn down additional support!) and have helped many long before my time.

Patience, communication, and sense of peace are absolutely necessary in your everyday work, so I looked up which stones would be helpful for focus, creativity, and working with others.

Rose Quartz

Representing unconditional love, this pretty pink stone is a favorite of many.  Rose Quartz opens the heart chakra and promotes friendship, self acceptance, harmony, and healing.  This is an ideal stone in any profession when working with others; this crystal allows us to feel compassion and understanding.  This is so commonly taken for granted in the workplace!  When you open your heart and think of your job as purposeful, the day simply goes by faster, everything flows easier, and you leave feeling better.  Empathy, care, and compassion goes a long way at work- each day I feel as if I have accomplished something good, which is a very new feeling for me after leaving the traditional business world.

Opalite supports all levels of communication, opening any emotional blockages, psychic abilities, and strengthening your spiritual connection.  It doesn’t hurt that it’s so pretty- it shines iridescent shades of pink, blue, and purple.  Opalite is an ideal stone for life transitions, especially when facing a big decision.  It’s an amazing tool for opening the third eye- the chakra of intuition.  As my one year in Boston approaches (tomorrow!), I look back on how my own third eye assisted in my decision to start a new life in Massachusetts.  Although I’ve been living on “gut feelings” for as long as I can remember, that was the third eye in action.  Opalite is also great for mood swings, increasing energy, overcoming fatigue, and encourages persistence.  This is a power stone to aid all areas of life!

This powerful and protective stone is not only beautiful, but it also benefits the immune system (which is always good in a school!).  Amethyst is most commonly known to support the crown chakra, which is your connection to the divine and your higher self.  Spiritual awareness, healing, inner peace, and balance are among the many benefits of amethyst, which are all perfect for any educator, writer, or artist.

Not only are these gemstones lovely, they each support your mind, body, and spirit.  I’ll admit, I’m hooked!  In addition to my pocket stones, I also love wearing crystal bracelets to boost my good vibes.  If you’re in the Boston area, my favorite stores for crystals are Seven Stars (Central Square, Cambridge) and ZuZu’s Healing Arts (Downtown Melrose).  You’ll even get a free stone at ZuZu’s when it’s your first time in!

Balancing Your Chakras With Crystals

“Balance” is a word I never used to have in my vocabulary.  Until last year, I didn’t actually understand what a well-rounded, balanced life meant.  In a society that is always “on the go,” self-care can be put on the back burner.  As many of us do, I have fallen into the habit of putting all of my energy into one area of my life, neglecting others- leaving me irritable, anxious, and even sick.

Learning about the seven chakras has been incredibly helpful for me to understand which part of my life is unbalanced.  Chakras are the energy wheels along your spine, each representing an important area of your mind, body, and spirit.  When one or more of these energy centers are blocked, it can cause illness, impairing us both physically and emotionally.

I’ve been learning more about crystals and their healing properties as well.  Yesterday I took a trip to a healing arts store filled with crystals, cards, candles, and much more.  We studied the benefits of the gemstones and let our intuition guide us through the store, leading us to what we “needed.”  I realized I didn’t have stones to represent two very important chakras- the root and the throat.  After I got home, I laid out all of my crystals and began to read more about how each stone can aid my own healing, energy, and balance.

The root chakra is your foundation- it represents safety, grounding, and life.

Stones for your root chakra include Red Jasper (shown above), Smoky Quartz, Garnet, and Black Onyx.

The sacral chakra is the emotional energy field.  It represents creativity, sexuality, and pleasure.

Stones for your sacral chakra include Sunstone (shown above), Tiger Eye, Amber, and Goldstone.

The solar plexus chakra is the center of confidence and self esteem.  A balanced solar chakra represents control, integrity, and self-will.

Stones for your solar chakra include Picture Jasper (shown above), Pyrite, Citrine, and Yellow Jasper.

The heart chakra is your ability to love.  It opens up feelings of kindness, compassion, and self-acceptance.

Stones for your heart chakra include Rose Quartz, Rhodonite, Jade (all shown above), and Emerald.

The throat chakra represents communication.  It opens up the ability to speak your truth and connect through words.

Stones for your throat chakra include Unakite (shown above), Angelite, Sodalite, and Aquamarine.

Third Eye

The third eye chakra is the center of your intuition.  When this chakra is open, it guides your perception and brings synchronicities, helping us tap into our emotional intelligence, truth, and wisdom.

Stones for your third eye chakra include Iolite, Opalite (both shown above), Lapis Lazuli, and Fluorite.

The crown chakra is the connection to your higher self and the Divine.  This is the chakra of enlightenment, awareness, and spirituality.

Stones for your crown chakra include Clear Quartz, Amethyst, Moonstone (all shown above), and Blue Lace Agate.

Each of these stones are powerful tools to assist you in your meditation practice, as well as using in your home, wearing as jewelry, or simply keeping in your pocket to help you through the day.  I often sleep with my Clear Quartz under my pillow- it is the Master Healer of all stones and represents all seven chakras!
