Someone to Quietly Sit With

Yesterday wasn’t anything out of the ordinary- yet it was a delightful Saturday afternoon.

It was one of those sunny, frigid December days; the type of day when you need sunglasses and gloves. With my notebook and planner in hand, I crept into a cafe for coffee and a warm place to write.

I spotted an empty seat by the window and hoped it would still be there by the time I ordered my drink. However, not only did I notice the empty seat- I noticed a familiar face at the spot next to what I hoped to be mine.

I remembered this person from the summer- we had sat next to each other at the window on the opposite side of the cafe. Just like me, he seemed to prefer the window seats- and just like the time before, I had my journal, planner, and black coffee.

We said a few words this time- chatting about the cold weather, our birthdays, and the dark winter days. He offered me his New Yorker magazine after writing in silence, looking out the window, and sipping warm drinks.

You always wonder what will come out of something like this; you wonder what the stranger sitting next to you will say, what they’ll do, or if you will ever see them again.

However, Saturday afternoon was perfect; because sometimes it’s just nice to have someone to quietly sit with.

Two Years of Living Beautifully

Time flies when you’re making the most out of life.

When I moved to Boston two years ago I didn’t know anyone, but I found comfort in my writing. I started this blog to share my journey, process my feelings, and learn the power of vulnerability.

Two years later, I’ve grown so much, connected with amazing people, and learned to be much braver. Thank you for following along, sending emails, and for all of your love and support.

Sunday Self Care: The Importance of Taking a Mental Health Day

We are a society always on the move.

We go to work, fill our schedules, and tend to the everyday tasks required to be productive and responsible people. More often than not, “self care” isn’t on those to-do lists.

Today, self care is #1 on my list.

It’s Sunday, and my alarm went off at 7AM. As I heard rain falling outside my window, I began resenting the things I had planned for the morning. I couldn’t remember the last day I got to spend simply caring for myself. I looked around my room and spotted the book I was reading and thought, “wouldn’t it be nice to just stay home to read and journal all day?”

So that’s what I’m going to do.

It’s important to stop and pause when we begin to feel restless or irritable. The two questions you need to ask yourself are:

Why am I feeling this way?

What have I done to care for myself?

You’ll probably find a correlation between the two answers; and it’s likely you’re caring for others better than you’re caring for yourself, whether it’s your family, your job, or other responsibilities. When your intuition tells you it’s okay to just stay home, say no, or relax, listen to your inner voice. It’s a gentle tap on the shoulder to remind yourself that it’s okay to sit still and take a break.

Self care Sunday is a perfect way to reset for the new week and to recharge your batteries. Whether you choose to do some yoga, enjoy a long meditation, enjoy a sea salt bath, or go for a walk in the park, these moments to yourself are crucial to living a happy, balanced life.

You’re the only one who truly knows what you need, so I hope you can take some time out for self care today, too.

Mindful Moments in the City Lights

The Public Garden is such a magical place in Boston. I spent my last evening of the long weekend strolling the park and taking in the beautiful city lights glistening on the pond. With my journal in hand, I sat on a bench and wrote out my intentions for the week.

Preparing for the days ahead by centering myself has been so helpful in staying grounded through stressful times.

Whenever I’m feeling uneasy, I just go back to my intentions and remember all the beauty around me.

Living with intention is key to a purposeful life- so don’t forget to take in those mindful moments of sitting in the park or enjoying the city lights. ✨

Strong and Secure- Setting Intentions

Each moon cycle I set an intention. On occasion I hope for something tangible, such as securing a new job or accomplishment, and other times I aim to let something go.

As the moon phases pass, I try to release what no longer serves, focus on improving myself, and live by the intentions I set.

This past New Moon, my intention was strength.

Strength means a lot of things to me. It can mean being assertive and confident, resilient through life’s challenges, or living with grace and grit. Strength has helped me pick up and move across the country, walk into interviews with ease, and hold my head high when life tried to pull me down.

I used to try and be a chameleon in life, seeking to fit in so I wouldn’t feel uncomfortable. Not anymore. I have learned how standing in my truth has helped me get into alignment with the right people, opportunities, but most importantly, my own self.

It’s okay to stand out in the crowd… and it’s a beautiful thing to be different. Instead of lowering my head or watering myself down, my intention is to be strong and secure- no matter what life brings my way.

Manifesting on 11/11/18: Inspired By My Future in Boston

It’s been a beautiful day in Boston, and I spent 11/11 doing the things that inspire me, bring me peace, and give me hope for the future.

Spending time in the Back Bay never fails to center me. It’s my favorite neighborhood in the city, and gave me a sense of home after moving here from New York City. From the quaint shops on Newbury Street to the tranquil aura of the Public Garden, I felt like I was taking an Uptown stroll to Central Park.

I used to think my future was in New York, but Boston has proved to be a much calmer, more relatable city to me. I moved here by myself, quickly creating my own home, new hopes and big dreams.

Wherever you go, there you are- and I’ve grown to love who I am here in Boston.

As I walked through the garden and sat by the Swan Pond, I thought of everything I hope for my future to hold. At precisely 11:11AM, I journaled in my notebook and admired the autumn colors all around me. One day, I dream of a home of my own where I can walk out my front door and enjoy the park. I dream of endless days writing on a park bench, inspiring others to fulfill their dreams, and being fully self sufficient.

Over the past couple of years I have had to take a few steps back to move forward- and I’ve grown stronger in the process. In a city where old meets new, I’m confident I was guided to come here- and with time, I know I’ll move even closer to embodying my purpose.

Family of Intent

It’s been almost two years in Boston- and what an adventure it has been.

When I first moved here, I only knew one person- a cute guy who I only talked to for my first two weeks. Knowing it wasn’t going anywhere, I moved on and proceeded to focus on myself- I found a place to live, a job, and new friends.

That first friend was Brenda, who welcomed me into her home, “The Nest,” complete with a cuddly cat and a basket full of slippers. She was precious; a friend who was such an angel I didn’t feel I deserved her. I was far from perfect-and I still am- but after two years, I recognize that she has always seen the light in me when I couldn’t see it for myself. Friendships like that are invaluable.

The holidays are coming up, and like the past few years, I’m spending it away from my family in Michigan. This doesn’t bother me. As much as I miss them, I have learned a valuable lesson from Brenda:

Your family can extend to your family of intent.

We develop soul connections over the years, meeting people of all walks of life who fill our hearts and help us become better people. Sometimes our own families may not understand or relate to us as those on the outside do; which is why it’s so important to realize your family of intent- the family you choose for yourself- is just as crucial as your own blood relatives.

No matter what your plans are for the holidays this year, remember how important authenticity and being true to yourself is. Cherish the people who love and understand you. Have gratitude for those who will lend a listening ear no matter what. Most importantly, try not to shy away from people who love you for all of your flaws. I may not always feel I deserve wonderful people in my life like my own mother, friends like Brenda, or even the love from a sweet feline, but I do.

I’m worthy of pure love- and so are you.

Sometimes, it takes your family of intent to help you recognize you’re beautiful for your gifts, your flaws, and the path you have walked.

Being Mindful of Your Social Media Consumption

I recently went through a major social media purge.

As I strolled through Copley Square checking my morning feed, I noticed how many irrelevant posts popped up on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Invitations to events across the country. Photo comments from people I hadn’t met. Accounts I followed that haven’t been used for years. From fashion brands to people I briefly knew in college, I wondered, “do I need to be seeing this?”

We underestimate how much the internet and media can flood our brains.

In my daily mindfulness practice, it’s also important for me to be mindful of what I consume online, too.

In one of my previous lives I was a fashion blogger, where I connected with brands, big and small, from all over the world. In one of my earlier pieces, “How a Fashion Blogger Became Minimalist,” I wrote about my shift in priorities, stressing the importance of quality over quantity, finding a signature style, but most importantly- finding happiness within.

Although I will never give up my love for style, it no longer makes me feel whole. I stopped looking at what everyone else “had,” and began finding happiness in my own world; not the world that someone portrays through a lens. This also goes for any social media use.

Whether it’s fashion, a lavish vacation, or a family photo, it’s been important for me to remember that looks can be deceiving. While I hope everyone feels content in their own skin, you can’t judge a book by its cover.

Instead of focusing on what everyone else is doing, get out there, enjoy the simple pleasures, and create your own mindful life that you love.
