Dream Big: Turning Blog Posts Into A Solid Foundation

Along the path of life, people may misunderstand your journey or doubt your dreams.

When I decided to move to San Francisco in 2008, months before the stock market crashed and prior to a publicly traded Facebook, an acquaintance scoffed at me saying, “well, that will be cheap.”

Within two weeks of this comment, I got a job at a popular tech startup downtown SF and was living in a rent-controlled apartment in Laurel Heights- even less than what some friends in Metro Detroit were paying- because for me, it’s always about thinker smarter, not harder.

What would have happened if I would have taken his comment to heart?

What would have happened in the course of my life had I held back from my cross- country moves, calling off a wedding, quitting jobs I was selling my soul for, or walking away from people who didn’t value me-

all because of what someone who barely knows me had to say?

Had I not moved to SF, I never would have gotten homesick the next year and moved to Austin. I wouldn’t have met some amazing people in Texas who I’m still in touch with today, and I probably wouldn’t have decided to move back to San Francisco had I not lived such a great life the first time around.

But in 2010, I was different. I had discovered blogging, sharing my stories online, and documenting my daily activities. I realized how powerful connection is- and how you don’t have to be involved in a local community to feel a sense of home; home is wherever you feel understood.

People doubted the San Francisco Giants that year, too. But we all know how that turned out. Fall of 2010, I drove back to the city after a work trip in Lake Tahoe, high on life after quitting an office manager job in data security. With my rental car windows down and the music on, I felt free- but I didn’t know what the rocky road of creative freedom would bring months and years into this journey.

The same person who mocked my California move asked to meet with me years later about marketing his company, as he saw my work and experience from San Francisco.

I couldn’t work with someone who once doubted me.

Over the years, I learned an important lesson the hard way: You don’t need to try to explain or justify anything to anyone when you make choices in life! Those who resonate with your path will find you- but it’s not your job to explain.

You can simply show them.

For now, try to ignore the negative or fear-based distractions and keep aiming high- the only limitation you have is what others try to project onto you- and what you believe. ✨ You have your own foundation to build upon.

The “Dream Big, Darling” rock was created from a post I wrote back in 2017, inspired by a Primark sweatshirt and a day planner from the Harvard Coop.

11/11/18: A Powerful Day Of Manifestation

Did you know 11/11/18 is one of the most powerful days for manifestation?

2018 is an 11 year (2 + 0 + 1 + 8 = 11), which holds the energy of creation, spiritual enlightenment, and authentic expression. With three 11’s in the date, the energy is amplified, being three times as powerful.

Even the actual shape of the number 11 represents a gateway; if you notice, you’ll see how 11 looks like two pillars. This gateway is a direct portal between divine inspiration and grounded manifestation.

Do you ever wonder why you continually receive the same ideas over and over, but haven’t acted on them? Perhaps you see all the signs, have repeating thoughts, or hear messages from others reminding you of these ideas. For me, my own passion for helping others through writing has manifested over the years, but I continue to wonder how to take it further. What is the universe telling me? Even more importantly, how do I act on it to bring my ideas to life?

I have big goals and dreams, and I know you do too.

11/11 is the time to stop, meditate, and ask for guidance.

Think about what your heart truly desires. What signs keep leading you in that direction? What actions can you take now to bring your ideas to life?

For 11/11, there are many steps you can take to manifest your divine inspiration into reality.

First, clear your energy. You can do this through meditation, smudging (I recommend white sage), lighting incense, or clearing your aura with crystals. Clear Quartz is a powerful crystal for clearing work as well as amplifying the energy of your own spirit and the other crystals in your collection.

Next, find a quiet space to write down your dreams and goals. Focus on what you do want, not the things you don’t. Whether you write these goals down or create a vision board, your creative efforts will be recognized by the universe and the spirit guides who help lead you on the right path.

Now, ask for guidance. Meditation is a powerful way to let your guides know your intentions. I try and meditate for at least a half hour every day- sometimes longer. By centering my mind and spirit, I am able to clear the outside noise and connect with my higher, authentic self- the self I am meant to be.

It’s common to be confused about what your heart actually desires when society can sway you in many different directions. Meditation assists in reaching into your soul, not media messages or what someone else’s opinion is.

This 11/11, tap into what your soul’s calling is, and visualize the future you wish to manifest. Your thoughts are powerful, and so is your ability to create a life you love. ✨

Living in Color

11390026_10103203216715038_3162792436979694897_n

A photo popped up on Facebook from a feature I was in on the former StyleList.com.  Four years ago, in the height of my fashion blogger days, I was getting ready for my move to New York City.  I had just escaped a bad relationship, where I had split my time between Traverse City, Charlotte, and San Francisco.  Off to New York, I would go- I would start fresh, and my dreams would come true.

Or so I hoped.

Bright eyed in a midi skirt with a fresh new bob, this girl was off to her new life on the Upper West Side.  Little did she know what was in store for her over the course of the next three years, though.

Capture
Flashback Friday. Pacific Heights, 2014

2014 was a magical year.  Despite the challenges, the heartbreak, and the transitions- it was exciting.  It was full of life.  New York had yet to make me jaded, and my eyes were open to every possibility.  Maybe too many possibilities!

Lately I’ve been getting back into that old mindset though- the mindset of living life with excitement.  Viewing it as one big story.  A big fairytale… where anything can happen.

The mindset of living life in color.

I’ve been stuck in black and white for so long that I almost forgot about the pinks and the reds.  The yellow of the sun and the orange of my favorite baseball team. The bright opal sky on a warm spring night and the greens of the forest.

So that’s where I’m going to pick back up again- in color.  Back to that girl in 2014 who was packing up three dozen boxes of clothes (no exaggeration) and accessories before shipping them to an uptown apartment she had never seen or been to before.  Who got on that plane on a warm June day, on her way to a brand new life.  That girl who walked into restaurants alone, ordered an Eggs Benedict, and would meet a cute stranger (true story).

That girl who was fearless.

Never, ever let anyone break you.  Take the challenges as opportunities to grow even stronger, and instead of looking back with regret, be grateful for the ones who have made you tough.

You deserve to live in color.

When the Fog Clears

I’ve had a vivid imagination for as long as I can remember.  From the detailed characters I created into illustrated story books at age 7 to the imaginary friends who were invited to my grandparent’s house for dinner, I’ve never had a lack of creativity in my life.

That’s even bled into my adulthood, too- I relentlessly see the good in people, create storylines for situations, predict how entire time period will turn out- from friendships to jobs- and sometimes even dream entire relationships in my head.

Well, that would only be if the other party hadn’t fooled me into believing those stories.

Nevertheless, it’s been interesting how the element of storytelling and fantasy has played a role in my adult life.  I’ve dramatized situations, looked fondly at people based on the hope I had for the person they were, and have created negative situations out of nowhere.  My intuition has always played a role in this storytelling, however, the people in my real-life have also become interesting characters.  There comes a day when you stop seeing life as purely a fairy tale, but one big series.  A whole collection of experiences, dramas, comedies, and tragedies.

Perhaps you can separate fantasy from real life.

Maybe it’s time to just start writing a new story.

San Francisco Soul

Ten years ago today I moved outside of Michigan for the first time in my life.  Taking a one way flight to SFO, I moved in with two girls I had never met, into an apartment I had only seen in photos.  Making a major life decision based on intuition, I felt an amazing feeling of euphoria for the first time in my life: it was a feeling of freedom.

A chance to start new.  A city to be free to find myself.

I had just called off my wedding and knew there was a lot more out there for me; but I had no idea what that would be.  Little did I know what a winding path I would have since that April evening!  My first days, months, and year in San Francisco was such a special time in my life- one that I will never, ever forget. ✨

Never be scared to follow your intuition and take risks- your heart knows that way.

Authentically You

The moon is in a brand new phase, the sun is shining, and the day has begun.

It’s the perfect day to live authentically you.

Today isn’t a day to apologize for something you believe in, or to dim your sparkle.  It’s not a day to hold back, to settle for less, or to keep quiet.

Today is a day to shine.

Sometimes we need a reminder to live the life we want, to speak our minds, and to have the courage to say “no.”  We need a reminder that we live in a magical world full of unlimited possibilities; a world where we can make our dreams a reality.

It’s important to remember that every day we wake up new and have yet another opportunity to take charge of our own life, happiness, and goals.  Isn’t that exciting?  Whether you’re in a rut in your career, relationship, or day-to-day routine, take out a pen and piece of paper and think about these three things:

Am I following my heart?

Am I making the most of the situation?

What changes can I make to live more authentically?

Journaling always helps me put life into perspective and focus on what I can improve. As I think about my own goals, I look around at other examples of “success.”  For some, it’s settling down and having a family.  For others, it’s climbing the corporate ladder.  Perhaps it’s academia, fame, money, or social status.  Everyone has their own idea of success, and each person has their own authentic truth.  What is meaningful to you?

It’s difficult to compare myself to others around me, as my personal success is found within and in the ways I connect with people.  Being able to open up and be vulnerable about my own challenges has helped me to heal, to live more authentically, and to help others know that they’re not alone.  Touching just one person gives me a deep sense of success, so I do my best to be honest, write with my heart, and teach the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

Holding back from our own talents, desires, and dreams may seem like the safe route, but you’ll quickly learn that it feels much better to step out of your comfort zone.  Whether you dream of taking that job across the country, ending a career to travel, or starting a new project, remember to listen to your heart, embrace your uniqueness, and have confidence in your creations.  There’s only one you, so don’t shy away from your authenticity.  The world is waiting!

Limited Beliefs: The Only Thing Holding You Back

In a world of hustle and bustle, taxes and retirement plans, societal norms and laws, it can be difficult to embody a spiritual life.  I’ve spent much of the past few years questioning the “expectations” of our culture, usually standing critically on the sidelines and running off to do my own thing.  Living as simply as possible has been crucial to my happiness, but our world always has a way of reminding me to stay grounded and focused on the light.  Instead of falling into depression or anxiety about the chaos around me, I chose to live in my own little world.

Who are we to say that the world can’t be a magical place?

Remember the excitement and wonder we had as children?  The curiosity we had for what was around every corner, for what each day had in store, for the enchantment of the unknown?  I’ve lived a lot of my adult life this way; discovering new places, making new friends, finding myself in once-in-a-lifetime situations.  I had a great sense of wonder as I moved from city to city, neighborhood to neighborhood.  I still feel that way as I explore places I’ve never been, snap photos of buildings I’ve never seen, and meet people from all over the world.

However, the “real world” sets in.  People criticize us, remind us of our failures, pick at our faults, and tell us our dreams aren’t possible.  That’s dense 3D energy that you don’t need.  No one ever achieved greatness by being held back by their critics.   As we enter the New Moon in Capricorn, I’m trying to leave behind my limited beliefs- the beliefs that tell me things aren’t possible, that I can’t, or the voice telling me “that won’t happen.”

Anything can happen.

Most of the magical moments are those we never expect.  I never would have been able to make up many of the tales I have yet to tell had I not had that wide-eyed wonder and joy.  Moving to New York City was a huge part of this for me; it seemed like a fantasy land where reality didn’t exist.  In a city of bright lights and dreams, I had the belief anything was possible- but just because I’m no longer doesn’t mean the magic has ended.  In fact, it’s more powerful than ever- because I’m conscious of it.

The best is yet to come.

During this New Moon, I am letting go of what I once was and making room for the magic that is on its way.  Although I recently deemed harmony as my word of the year, my theme for 2018 is limitless.  Limitless opportunities and infinite possibility.  The only person who has held me back from success, happiness, or stability is myself; if I continue to follow my heart, listen to my soul, and continue working hard, the magic will present itself.

and this time, I won’t have to chase it.
