The Past In Your Head- The Future Is In Your Hands

Sometimes we surprise ourselves.

I’ve wanted to take a comedy class ever since going to student shows back in 2008 while living in San Francisco.  A couple of years later, a date took me to a great show at Cobb’s in North Beach- and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Whether I’m writing stories in my notebook, reading a humorous memoir,  or watching stand-up on Netflix, comedy is a huge part of my life.  It helps me cope, put life into perspective, and not take things so seriously.

Although I have always added a bit of my dry humor and unexpected viewpoints into my writing, I decided it was finally time to step out of my comfort zone, push myself, and learn something new.

I used to think I could sustain on writing stories about the ironic, funny, or terrible things that have gone wrong in my life and turn it into art, but now I’d rather let that go- for now- and focus on the future.

Why keep living in the past when you have a brand new chapter to write?

I moved to Boston for a very clear reason: a fresh start.  I moved here for many reasons, but most importantly, I moved here for new opportunities.  I’ve moved from city to city before, running from myself, but this time was different: I moved here to stand still, find happiness within, and truly find myself.

In Boston, I don’t have family members pointing their fingers at me, judging my old decisions.  I don’t have my junior high bullies laughing at me when I make a mistake.  I don’t have the small-town minds looking at me as if I have three eyes when I walk down the street in something fashionable.

No one here cares about who I used to be.  They care about who I am now.

I saw this quote the other day, and it made me smile:

“The Past In Your Head- The Future Is In Your Hands.”

It was a reminder to stop overthinking and go for it– just like I did when I signed up for my class.  It’s not always easy, but if you can have compassion for your former self, learn from your mistakes, and take chances in the future, you’ll become that much stronger.

Remember, we are all free from the past if we allow ourselves to be.   Today is a brand new day- so open to a fresh page, take a sigh of relief, and start writing your story.
