Dream Big, Darling

As 2017 comes to a close, I’ve smudged away old regrets, lost dreams, and looked toward everything the future has to offer.  I’m ready to take on 2018… are you?

It’s easy to dwell on the past, old mistakes, or missed opportunities.  For years I didn’t even realize I was settling for less!  Instead of following my heart, I listened to the opinions of people who weren’t in alignment with me, questioned my abilities, or stayed quiet in fear of being misunderstood.  It took several years, a lot of lessons, and some encouragement to discover I didn’t need to believe in anything but myself.

I hid my talents and creativity for years because I was afraid of being criticized.  It didn’t even occur to me that I may get positive feedback!  As a child, any recognition wasn’t worth the hurtful things I may have heard (keyword: may).  At seven years old I wrote and illustrated an entire collection of children’s stories called “Suey and Friends.”  Suey was a chipmunk who went on all sorts of adventures with her crew.  Each character had a unique personality, often based on dreams I had or friends of my own.  My mom still has those old pieces of paper somewhere back in Michigan… she believed in me and encouraged me to continue creating.  Although it was just a hobby to me, she always insisted we send them to agents or publishers.  Being the shy and insecure girl I was, I never agreed to it.

It’s been 25 years since my last Suey story, but if there’s one takeaway from this all, it’s that life is too short to hold back.

Today I would rather be criticized than miss an opportunity.

2018 is right around the corner, and I’m ready to take on the next steps of my life- whatever they may be.  2017 was an amazing year to focus on myself, develop a solid foundation, and decide what I truly wanted.  Big dreams no longer scare me, and hard work has become second nature.  The key to hard work is to follow your heart and do something you love.

Since moving on from Suey and friends, there’s a long list of things I have done as a middle finger to the people who hurt or second guessed me.  Although I didn’t do anything deliberately mean, I did my best to succeed, stand out, or surpass any doubts or negativity they threw my way.  I called off my engagement with a controlling engineer and moved to San Francisco, started a style blog in my hometown of people who bullied me, and pursued a marketing career in New York.  Things definitely didn’t go as planned, but that’s okay.  Although I am glad the anger and pain inspired my creativity, I learned one important lesson:

You don’t need to prove yourself to anyone but you.

When your intentions are pure, everything falls in place.  My life often fell apart because it wasn’t acting in alignment with my soul: I was simply doing things out of ego.  I no longer hold those old resentments or fear… and I can thank my spiritual practice and support system for giving me the strength to live my life with more love and compassion.

As you reflect on your goals for the future, remember to follow your heart; it will certainly take you a lot further than acting on ego or fear.  When you set your mind to it, you can have anything you want out of this crazy and beautiful life.  Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t.

Significance of the Winter Solstice

It’s officially winter!

Winter Solstice marks an important turning point for all of us; it’s the start of a new cycle and powerful time for reflection, intention setting, and spiritual growth.  As the year comes to an end, so do many old habits, regrets, fears, and pain.  It’s a time to let go, to look within, and find clarity within one’s soul.

I have more good news- Mercury Retrograde is coming to an end!

Unlike many who prefer warmer temperatures, I absolutely love winter; it’s a peaceful time of self-care, soul-cleansing, and hope.  It’s no surprise, either- I came into this world on a snowy winter evening at 9:08PM (12/22!).  My birthdate explains my affinity for even numbers and patterns, too.

Winter represents a more feminine, inward energy; it’s a wonderful time to tap into your intuition, compassion, and heart.  Where is your soul guiding you?  Now is the time to listen; your heart always knows the way.  Listen to the signs and go with your gut. ❤

Now is a powerful time for us to focus on self-care, to pay attention to our dreams, and set goals for 2018.  Whether or not you’re a fan of the cold weather, cuddle up in a warm blanket, make a cup of cocoa, and enjoy the positive energy that the new season brings.  It’s going to be a wonderful year ahead.

The Spiritual Side of Money

Money used to be a scary thing to me.  Money is necessary for all of us to live, which can be very intimidating.  There’s good news, though: there are endless ways to earn it.  Endless!

Just the other week I was thinking, “how am I going to supplement my income when school is out for holiday?”  This was a fear-based thought.  Suddenly, I acknowledged it and re-framed my thinking.  I looked online, got some advice from family and friends, then decided to take action.  I was clear about what I was looking for, which hasn’t always been the case in the past.  I used to scramble, hustle, and take the first thing that came along- no wonder I wasn’t content in some of the positions I took.

Once I looked at my holiday week as an opportunity, not one, but two options presented themselves.  I also received emails out of nowhere from people asking about marketing work (which I have retired for writing and education).

Then, it clicked.  money isn’t anything to be afraid of.  Money is energy.

The more you put in, the more you get out- but I didn’t understand what that meant in the past.  I used to think hard work meant long hours, climbing your way to the top, office politics, networking, etc.  No.  You must work with your heart, not out of fear- fear of not enough.  You also need to work smarter, not harder.  Yes, success does come from hard work and a lot of time, but when you’re doing what you love, it’s effortless.  I found myself writing from 8AM until 2 in the morning on Saturday!  I only got up to go get food; yet it was the most pleasant day I’ve had in a while.

Opportunities begin to align when you stay true to yourself and listen to what soul your soul is saying- not the outside world.

We all need to pay bills, but there are endless ways you can do something you actually enjoy if you follow your gut and ignore your ego.  Remember that you’re of service to the world, and if you are co-creating with source / a higher power, your light will shine through and you will be rewarded.

The rewards may not always be monetary- at least not right away- but rest assured that you’ll always be taken care of.  Each day I feel rewarded after leaving school or working on my writing, but it’s on an emotional level.  These are things I would do for free! (but thankfully I don’t have to)

I have also been channeling Archangel Gabriel, the angel of communication, to help support my work.  Earlier this year I began following Melanie Beckler of Ask-Angels.com, where I have been learning a lot on connecting and communicating with our guides.  Archangel Gabriel looks over the creatives and messengers- the writers, teachers, artists, and journalists.  It’s interesting to see how angels can help us in our daily lives, including our work!

Additionally, I love using my crystals to help support my work, too.  I wear Citrine to connect with Archangel Gabriel and carry Red Jasper for grounding, Rose Quartz to keep me aligned with love, and Green Jade to attract abundance!

Remember, it’s all in your vibration.  Keep thinking positive- your energy will support you along the way.

Ask For What You Want

I’ve sometimes wondered why my path has been so up and down, back and forth.  From the cities I’ve lived in to the variety of jobs on my resume, people have never been able to quite figure me out.  I don’t care.  However, as I reflect on the past ten years or so, my passions and values have been exactly the same; I just didn’t know what to do to manifest them into a stable life.

I’ve done all kinds of things to seek stability, but in the end, they just weren’t in alignment with my creative nature or the purpose lined up for me.  I’ve had an incredible need to experience all life has to offer, yet when my heart is full and I’m doing what I love, I see no need for anything more.

This past year was a time of “cleaning house,” letting go, and laying the foundation for the future.  Before now I never asked for what I wanted… because I didn’t quite know yet.

First, I had to get into alignment with my heart to figure it out.

I’ll be ringing in 2018 the same way I did last year– going to The Nest for Brenda’s New Year’s Eve party and making vision boards.  I had a great time last year, just shy of one month into my life in Massachusetts.  Back then I had no idea what my future would look like; I just wanted to heal and be happy.

and I did.

My vision board for 2017 was spot-on aside from a trip to Paris and a money tree.  It wasn’t a very ambitious vision board… it looks like I set out to spend the year lounging in bed (partially true).  Jokes aside, I’m no longer spinning my wheels like I used to.  There was a lot of self-discovery, self-care, and self-compassion.  I gave myself a break of trying to be “perfect” and used the year to document the lessons I learned along the way.

I used to dip my toes into situations only to pull back out and try something new.  No; not any longer.  I’ll be turning 33 this Friday (12/22!) and I’m no longer concerned about checking off “life boxes” like I was in my 20’s.  I’ve had many opportunities to check them all more than once, but I turned my nose and chose freedom.

I’ll always choose freedom.  The right person won’t restrict me from living out my purpose, because I’ll be in alignment with my soul.

It’s extremely exciting and uplifting to know that our thoughts create our reality.  We have the freedom to build whatever we want in this life.  In 2018, I will no longer sell myself short- I’ll continue writing, keep a budget, find that publisher, finish my book, travel more, and connect with even more amazing people who inspire me to be the best I can be.  Thanks to finally doing work I love, living in a place that feels like home, and surrounding myself with people who encourage me, I have a newfound faith in the future.

Most importantly, I have a newfound faith in myself.

12/12 Gateway: A Time of Remembering

I’ve been doing a lot of reading on the collective energy this past year, wondering if I was the only person feeling a major “shift.”  I’ve felt an awakening ever since January, and it turns out I’m not the only one.  2017 has been an amazing year of transformation, growth, and enlightenment.  As the year wraps up, today marks a special gateway into peace and prosperity: the 12/12 Time of Remembering.

I came across Jenny Schultz‘s blog, which had a wonderful explanation of this powerful time:

What does the Time of Remembering mean?

It means that all are being shown who they are and also who they are not. One will see what they need to, experience what they need to in order to step fully into their power and embody all that they are. Another will be shown very clearly where they have given away their power to institutions, beliefs, and other people. Most of you will experience a melding of both. As you embody all that you are in each moment, all that you are not must also come to light. Understand that in each moment you are being given a choice.

What type of choice?

You are being given a choice to push past all the doubt and disbelief and honor who you know that you are at your core. In order to do this, all the layers of the matrix must fall away. This can be liberating for some, but many experience deep discomfort as all that they know is being challenged.

Letting old densities leave us can be extremely uncomfortable, causing anxiety, worry, and doubt.  We’ve all been through a lot this past year, so now is the time to prepare for 2018.  As we have let old habits, beliefs, doubts, and patterns fall away in 2017, 2018 will be a time to build, grow, and manifest our goals.  It’s time to live the life you love!

Be conscious of the signs that may be leading you on the right path.  12/12 has many other spiritual significances, connecting us with our higher self.

You’re connecting with the collective

12 represents unity, and two of them together are twice as powerful!  On 12/12, people all over the world are meditating at 12:12 (both AM and PM).  If you get the chance, please tap into that positive energy!  When in doubt, remember that you are part of something much bigger.

You’re on the right path

It’s such a relief to get just a tiny sign that you’re on the right path.  Perhaps you’re thinking of changing careers, picking up a new hobby, or finally writing that book- if so, 12/12 is confirming that now is the time!  Be careful to start new projects until after Mercury Retrograde, though- until December 22nd, be weary of communication issues, technical failures, and confusion.  Now is the time to plan, not execute!

It’s a time of manifestation

Continue to follow your path and dreams!  I’ve been searching for meaning in my life, and 2018 is the time for it all to come to fruition. It’s easy to try to hurry and watch the pieces fall into place, but remember to go with the flow.  If things aren’t working as planned, try to be patient and know that you’re being supported.

Stay positive

It’s so easy to give up when it feels like you’re far from your goals.  Seeing 12:12 is a sign to remember to stay positive- you will better manifest your goals with the power of thought.

I’ve reflected a lot on my goals, what I used to think I wanted, and what I know I want now.  As I get closer into alignment, my faith in the future has grown stronger- at last, I know I am supported.

First Snow

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Although the temperatures have dropped, winter is my favorite season.  There’s something magical about the first snowfall, cozy nights by the fireplace, and enjoying a cup of hot cocoa.

Things slow down during the wintertime, and maybe that’s why I like it so much.  It’s a time of reflection and hope for the new year.

2017 has been a year of a lot of changes, growth, and newfound optimism.  Although it hasn’t always been a walk in the park, each and every lesson has brought me closer to the person I want to be in 2018.

I hope you are enjoying the season as much as I am!  What are your favorite things about winter?

Five Myths About Meditation

Calming the mind is no easy task in our busy world.  With hundreds of things on the brain, it can be a challenge to focus on what is really important in the moment: the actual moment.

Many people have told me they “can’t” meditate.  I thought this for years!  Sitting still and trying not to think about anything seemed pointless… until I actually understood its purpose.

Meditation is meant to clear your mind- hence why it’s so hard for some people.  Once you can get into the moment, you’ll find how beneficial, comforting, and relaxing meditation is for you.  I promise, once you learn how to meditate, you won’t look back!

There are many common reasons that people simply never start meditating.  Here are a few myths that may have prevented you from a regular meditation practice.

1) In order to meditate, you must sit still in a quiet room.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to sit still to meditate!  Many find the same calming sensation through running, yoga, crafts, and other hobbies.

2) Meditation is a New Age fad.

Meditation has been around for thousands of years.  Despite the New Age popularizing the practice, it’s far from a new fad.  It has many health benefits in addition to mental clarity, too!

3) Meditation is religious.

Although meditation is a spiritual practice for me, it is not religious.  My practice has nothing to do with a higher power, although it does help me connect with my higher consciousness and intuition.

4) Meditation takes too much time.

All you need is a few minutes!  Think about how much time you wasting worrying, planning, and wondering.  Imagine being able to do all of your daily obligations with a clear head and calm spirit.

5) Meditation requires rituals or spiritual practices in order to work.

I’ve seen many books, videos, and tips on meditation techniques.  These are great suggestions! However, they’re not necessary for your own meditation practice.  In fact, not all of them work for me.  I find that sitting in nature, relaxing in a comfortable space at home with incense, or closing my eyes while sitting on the train is just as effective as following a guided meditation or following a ritual.

If you’re able to calm your mind, you’re already on the right path!

How to Survive Mercury Retrograde

It’s that time of year again!

If you’re familiar with Mercury Retrograde, you know what I’m talking about.  Mercury, the planet of communication, goes into reverse, causing a three week period of communication confusion, technical complications, and travel issues.  Since the planet is actually going backwards, it effects our lives here on earth, too.

We moved into retrograde on December 3rd (the day of the Supermoon) and will be in it until December 22nd (my birthday!).  The last Mercury Retrograde occurred August 12th to September 5th, where we prepared for new beginnings.  Many of us felt this energy; I know I did.  One example of my own Mercury Retrograde mishaps included losing my phone, which happened at a terrible time- while I was interviewing for jobs and doing temp work.  Nobody could get a hold of me for three very crucial days- or so I thought.  This was a huge lesson for me to slow down after unknowingly running on nervous energy for weeks.  Instead of managing my time effectively or going with the flow, I was chasing my tail.

I also realized I had been relying on my phone too much.  During the five days I didn’t have my phone, I began talking to people for directions, walked even more than usual, learned new areas of the city, and even used a payphone (yes, they still exist).  It made me value my own quiet time, reminded me to pick up that library book I checked out, and was a lesson about the kindness of strangers.  Not only did I survive the fiasco, but I made a new friend in the process- I got an email from a Good Samaritan who had found my phone in the park!

Depending on how you see it, Mercury Retrograde has positive aspects that can provide great lessons.  Just as I lost my primary form of communication, my phone, I gained an appreciation for slowing down.  This is also a good time to clean house.  Mercury Retrograde allows you to let go of any past feelings or behaviors that no longer serve you.  Although these lessons are helpful, there are many ways to avoid these common mishaps, too!

Be Careful What You Say

Don’t be surprised if your blunt opinion isn’t well-received!  December’s Mercury in Retrograde is ruled by firey Sagittarius, which could cause others to take your joke the wrong way.  Be sure to think before you speak!

Proofread Everything

Spell check, make sure you included the attachment, and don’t send the email to the wrong recipient!  These are all typical communication mishaps that can happen during the retrograde.

Avoiding Starting New Projects

Keep working on your existing projects, but don’t start something new, sign any contracts, or make major decisions during this time.  There is bound to be miscommunication, confusion, or arguments.  Hold off until after the holidays- it will be a less stressful time, anyway,

Don’t Make Big Purchases

A lot of electronics can go haywire during the retrograde.  I’ve been told to avoid making electronic purchases, such as phones, laptops, or TVs- since this can’t always be avoided, it’s a good idea to invest in the warranty!

Give Yourself Time to Travel

It’s the holidays, so many of us will be traveling near and far.  Allow extra time when going to the airport, check the traffic map before leaving the house, and be sure you clicked the right button when purchasing tickets (yes, this is a true story- someone bought me a plane ticket once for the wrong month).

Bottom line: double check, double check, double check!  Don’t be afraid to go outside this Mercury Retrograde- just slow down and think before you speak.  Remember, it’s a time to clean house and move forward.  The past is a place of reference- not a place of residence!

Get ready for 2018- it will be a time to embrace being the authentic you that you stepped into in 2017.
